2010-2011 Events October 29. We learned about how storm drains go directly into streams, visited a stream where the fish had died, painted yellow warning fish on storm drains, left leaflets at people's houses, and then visited a healthy stream full of young salmon. Planting trees and shrubs at Sterling Park, Quamichan Lake, with Kai Rietzel from the Quamichan Watershed Stewardship Society and Jen Morgen from the Cowichan Land Trust. May 7. 12th Annual Low Tide Day in Cowichan Bay. February, 2011. Tom Rutherford from the Living Rivers Project took us "fishing" on a very cold day. We went to the new side channel at Sh-hwuykwselu (Busy Place Creek) and unexpectedly found a large number of coho salmon, even though the side channel was just built last Fall. Then we planted trees in the cold, hard ground, so the fish will have shade in the summer and the water will stay cool. November 29, 2010. Naturalist Dave Aldcroft led us on a birding walk in Cowichan Bay. We saw lots of interesting birds. October, 2010. Jodie Krakowski told us all about trees, and then we made ourselves into a tree! Saturday, May 15, 2010. Low Tide Day in Cowichan Bay. Just like last year, we found fish and worms in a beach seine led by DFO biologist Rusty Sweeting and the "critter count" quadrat study, counting clams. Grandfather Heron put in an appearance and we had lunch and music, too. More than 200 people were there for the cleanup, science, and celebration.
